Dr Juergen Friedel

Senior researcher and Head of the Soil Fertility and Cropping Systems Working Group at the Division of Organic Farming, Department of Sustainable Agricultural Systems at BOKU.

Dr Friedel is an Agronomist with a habilitation in soil biology and has more than 50 peer- reviewed SCI ranked research publications. He has expertise in soil management effects, i.e. crop rotation, fertilization and soil cultivation, on C and N turnover of soil organic matter, on soil microbial biomass, on pre-crop effects of legume crops, on crop yield and quality, and on management impacts on the resources soil, water and biodiversity. The focus of his experimental work is on field experiments in organic and low-input farming systems to increase soil fertility and sustainability or cropping systems under semi-humid, Pannonian site conditions. JFK has contributed as an investigator to several national and international projects including the FP7 EU project BIOBIO and the ERA-NET Core Organic projects IMPROVE-P, AGTEC-Org, and PathOrganic. He was a lecturer at Hohenheim University, Germany, but is currently teaching at BOKU University. He has been the main supervisor of six PhD studies and reviewer for several journals. Professional memberships include the Gesellschaft für Pflanzenbauwissenschaften e. V. (German Crop Science Society), the Deutsche Bodenkundliche Gesellschaft (German Soil Science Society), and the Österreichische Bodenkundliche Gesellschaft (Austrian Soil Science Society).
