Dr Sutherland co-ordinated the FarmPath 7th Framework Project (Farming Transitions: Pathways towards regional sustainability of agriculture in Europe) (2011- 2014) and H2020 PLAID (Peer to peer learning: Accessing Innovation through Demonstration), where the Hutton DigiFarm was developed. She conducts research into: agri-environmental decision-making, agricultural transitions, farm business diversification (renewable energy), organic farming, and agricultural knowledge systems. LAS has published substantively on farmer decision-making in relation to the agri-environment and will lead work within FRAMEWork on engaging farmers in monitoring of native biodiversity, to enable them to develop a culture of producing ecosystem services.
