How can farmers evaluate their sustainability performance?

Project publishes practitioner assessment tool enabling farmers to evaluate performance across sustainability indicators


FRAMEwork has published a Sustainability Assessment Tool designed for arable and mixed farming systems across Europe. The tool provides methods for evaluating farm performance across 16 key sustainability indicators organised into environmental, social and economic dimensions. Farmers can complete assessments in approximately two hours, whilst cluster facilitators can aggregate results across multiple farms in a single working day. The tool accommodates diverse farming systems from organic smallholdings to conventional grain producers across different European contexts, emerging directly from feedback gathered during FRAMEwork's intensive work with Farmer Clusters across multiple years of collaboration and learning.



A colour-coded approach to progress


Each indicator employs a structured four-statement approach, with farmers selecting which statement best reflects their circumstances. Assessment results are colour-coded: red for 25%, yellow for 50%, light green for 75%, and dark green for 100%. This visual feedback reveals which areas of sustainability are performing well and which merit further attention. The framework's modular design allows farmers to focus resources on areas most relevant to their farm system and business priorities. Rather than demanding perfect scores across all dimensions, the tool shows which areas of strong performance can be celebrated and communicated, and which areas merit further attention and resources. This framing supports farmer motivation and genuine learning rather than inducing guilt about performance gaps. The assessment process itself becomes a learning opportunity rather than a compliance burden.


Serving farmers, facilitators and policymakers


The assessment covers 16 indicators spanning governance, environmental, social and economic domains. Governance indicators assess corporate ethics and stakeholder dialogue. Environmental dimensions address water quality, land degradation, biodiversity monitoring, and hedgerow length. Material use examines fertiliser and pesticide efficiency. Energy considerations assess renewable electricity and consumption reductions. Economic dimensions evaluate profitability and income from environmental subsidies. The tool serves multiple stakeholders simultaneously. Farmers obtain reliable feedback about whether their biodiversity management efforts deliver genuine environmental benefits rather than producing warm feelings without ecological substance. Without such concrete feedback, motivation wanes, and farmers may abandon new practices.


Cluster facilitators gain concrete assessment methods to communicate progress to stakeholders and community members, securing continued local support and investment in cluster activities. Policymakers receive credible evidence of impact at landscape scale, with confidence that reported improvements reflect genuine ecological change rather than wishful thinking. The development process involved repeated cycles of testing with real farmers to ensure the tool serves their needs and integrates scientific rigour with practical accessibility.
