Postdoc at the Alexander von Humboldt-Professorship of Environmental Economics. < Back Dr Fabian Thomas Postdoc at the Alexander von Humboldt-Professorship of Environmental Economics. Dr Thomas' work focuses on the evaluation of agricultural and agri-environmental policies with experimental economic methods. He has developed and implemented economic experiments with farmers in Germany. He is furthermore interested in using behavioural insights for agricultural and agri-environmental policy formulation. He is part of the ZANEXUS project team, which has developed a science-based architecture for the Common Agricultural Policy for the German Federal Agency for Nature Protection (BfN). Currently, he has been hired by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission as an expert for policy evaluation to co-develop and co-implement a field experiment with farmers in several Member States. He is furthermore a contributing author of the forthcoming IPBES methodological assessment on values. Since early 2019, he is running a small-scale farm himself.

Research Scientist within GWCT’s Farmland Ecology Department < Back Rachel Nichols Research Scientist within GWCT’s Farmland Ecology Department Rachel recently submitted her PhD Thesis on identifying and amending agri-environment schemes to better support wild bees and other insect pollinators on farmland. She identified several key wildflower species to include in future seed mixes for maximum wild bee diversity during a large-scale field trial. She is experienced in setting up farm-level field experiments, and conducting wildflower and insect pollinator surveys, with a specialisation in solitary bee identification. During her PhD she also trialled a potential novel agri-environment scheme by creating fresh “scrapes” in field margins, successfully attracting ground-nesting bees and wasps to make nests in the scrapes. Prior to commencing her PhD, Rachel completed a Masters in Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology, conducting a behavioural foraging experiment on bumblebees and honeybees.

Research centre for ecology, farming and rural places at Raumberg- Gumpenstein. < Back Austrian Agricultural Research and Education Centre Research centre for ecology, farming and rural places at Raumberg- Gumpenstein. Part of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism HBLFA is specialized in multifunctional farming systems and in developing complex landscape analysis in view of sustainable and efficient usage of natural potentials. IN FRAMEWORK HBLFA will be responsible for one of the 12 Pilot Studies of the project. The Pilot Study deals with organically managed grassland. The focus will be set on ecological staged grassland management for Biodiversity Sensitive Farming, considering the interaction between local and regional dynamics of biodiversity and its relationship with farming systems in grassland-based organic farms. The core of the contribution is the guidance and supervision of approx. 10 organic pilot farms with permanent grassland. Farmer and volunteer training activities on how to implement and work within ecological staged grassland management will be organised. This will also be done directly “on the job” by implementing the necessary management tasks directly on the farms, under supervision. Previous Next
