  • The Framework Project | Biodiversity Matters

How can we make agriculture more resilient? H2020 FRAMEwork is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation project exploring multi-benefit solutions to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services at a landscape level. Capitalising on biodiversity Capitalising on biodiversity Capitalising on biodiversity Exploring the benefit s of valuing biodiversity... with people across our food system. H2020 FRAMEwork A New Network The Framework project piloted a new network of Advanced Farmer Clusters across Europe and the UK. These Clusters across Europe were based on learnings from a successful network of over 100 in the UK, they supported farmers collectively achieving conservation and sustainability interventions important to them, and their regions. explore Joined-Up Thinking We used our Farmer Clusters as living labs for research-in-action insights. Research from the project spanned ecological and social sciences, exploring how people can be empowered to better manage biodiversity. explore Leveraging Technology We convened for nature through Citizen Science apps, community engagement approaches and innovative tools. We connected people with tech that helps them benefit from, and improve, biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural areas. explore Why is this important? • Work Package 5 | EU H2020 FRAMEwork Project

Biodiversity Management + Monitoring < Back Work Package 5 Biodiversity Management + Monitoring Biodiversity management and monitoring provided technical knowledge and innovation to support the implementation of biodiversity sensitive management practices and biodiversity targeting and monitoring. To achieve this, WP5 developed and tested a DST (FRAMEselect) that integrated technical guidance on biodiversity monitoring and management to help farmers identify the most ecologically sound and pragmatic solution for biodiversity sensitive farming as part of the operations of the Advanced Farmer Cluster network in WP2. To support this, biodiversity sensitive management practices were reviewed, and new methods developed through participation with the Advanced Farmer Cluster network. FRAMEselect was also underpinned by biodiversity indicators to estimate the impact of selected actions on farm environmental performance and enhanced ES. Monitoring methods and strategies were developed in parallel with the indicators and included novel approaches, e.g. bioacoustics or remote sensing (e.g. AMIBIO). Focussing on reliability and ease of use, they were designed and tested in partnership with Cluster farmers and facilitators to ensure they were suitable for application in citizen science monitoring programmes. Member of our advisory board < Back Prof. David Kleijn Member of our advisory board Prof. David Kleijn is an ecologist working at Wageningen University interested in biodiversity conservation on farmland and optimization of ecosystem services in agriculture. Together with his group he studies the impacts of land-use change on biodiversity and effects of biodiversity on agricultural production with the aim to identify win-win situations. This is increasingly done in collaboration with local stakeholders such as farmer organizations, municipalities, conservation organizations, water boards and provincial governments. Kleijn previously coordinated the successful EU FP5 EASY and FP7 LIBERATION projects and currently coordinates the H2020 Showcase project.

Fundación Artemisan is a private Spanish non-profit aiming to conserve wildlife for the benefit of biodiversity and our countryside. < Back ARTEMISAN Foundation Fundación Artemisan is a private Spanish non-profit aiming to conserve wildlife for the benefit of biodiversity and our countryside. Created in 2017, FA working in a wide range of topics through research & innovation, communication and legal defence. FA supported by 160 donors and 400 members from Spain and abroad and 85% of their budget is private. Among their patrons are the Spanish Hunters’ Federation, the Association of Landowners, the Game meat producers’ association and other groups and associations related to game management andconservation. FA aims to conserve game and other wildlife through applied science and is currently working on declining species (including non-game ones), habitat and predator management, sustainable use of natural resources and also social and economic factors. FA also works to disseminate all results to the public, one of the key points for the organization IN FRAMEWORK Artemisan will work in close collaboration with GCT and also lead a study in Spain. Artemisan will lead the creation of one FC in Spain. It will be an Orchard system, a classic landscape dominated by olive groves, as the cultivation of olive trees is one of the most important within the Mediterranean Basin. At the moment, several farmers are interested to implement agri-environmental measures and the land also managed for wild game and other species. FA aims to make the most of the current farmers’ interest on the benefits of habitat management for game, protected species and yields. Our challenge is to develop successfully habitat improvements adapted to the different scenarios, which are also suffering from climate change and specifically from extended drought periods and soil erosion. There is also the risk of land abandonment at the cluster, one of the main problems for farming in Spain. FA is confident that other NGOs and the farmers’ unions will collaborate as third parties, improving the social aspects of the clusters. Their experience in previous project will ensure this.
